Kokyu / Breathing In Still Position
My Breathing Method based on Koichi Tohei Sensei’s Breathing Method -Stretch your back, drop your shoulders down and relax your whole body. Throw away your tension and stress into your centre (below your navel). -Close your eyes, open your mouth slightly, and begin to exhale from your centre through your mouth, while making a small "huuu" sound. *With the image that Ki / Energy radiates to every part of the body, and further to every part of the universe. At this time, your belly begins to indent. This is abdominal breathing. -When you have finished exhaling from your body taking 25 to 30 seconds, tilt your upper body slightly forward and exhale the last breath. -In the same posture, you begin to inhale quietly through your nose to your centre. At this time, the belly starts to expand. With the image of collecting energy from the surroundings, from nature and from the universe to your centre. *Imagine this planet is at the centre of the universe and you are sitting alone on it. -Let it take about 20 seconds. Then your upper body goes backwards to the posture when you started, breathe in the last breath. -Put your mind into your centre and relax for about 5 seconds. -Now again, begin to exhale. *Imagine collecting energy from the universe and the nature to your centre and sending it to every part of yourself.
Kokyu / Breathing In Motion
Kokyu is one of the most important factors in Aikido. This term is used in Kokyu-Ho (Breathing Technique/Method), Kokyu-Ryoku (Breathing Power) and Kokyu-Nage (Breathing Throw) and more. In Japan, it is a broad and meaningful expression that goes beyond simply breathing or respiration. It is also an expression that is widely used in Budo (Martial arts), and beyond Budo, such as “Ah-Un No Kokyu” (Breathing of Ah-Un) -The harmonizing mentally and physically of two parties engaged in an activity-, and like “Iki No Atta Fufu” (Partners who have matching breathes) and so on. I believe that the practice of matching breaths is the foundation. If you can practice and learn to match your breath with your partner properly, you will be able to purposely mismatch your breath with your partner’s breath for your advantage. Practice to sense and engage with your partner’s breath, and then take your partner into your breath. For these who do not understand Aikido well, this practice may seem unreal. A teacher who was an inner disciple said that O-Sensei had said, "It has to look like it is unreal in the end.” When it comes to physical breathing, if you can sense the partner’s breathing, you will enter at the moment when the partner has finished exhaling. Unlike solo breathing method, you do not open your mouth when you exhale. Also, if you are shoulder breathing, your partner will be able to read this breathing, so it should be abdominal breathing. I once read that O-Sensei said, “Exhale while you are inhaling, inhale while you are exhaling. Inhale spherically.” I think this is necessary to eliminate weakness at the moment of inhaling. I think if we can train to cultivate the Kokyu power, which can generate power while inhaling, it will do. I think elements like, timing, rhythm, tempo and beat are all involved in Kokyu. It's like trying to feel music with no sound; where you can feel the signs on your skin and all senses you have. We need to practice incorporating the breaths of nature and the universe into our breaths. I believe that Kokyu is the key to open the mind to enlightenment in any field, such as martial arts, art and in everyday life.

Mu (Nothingness)
I have had experiences while painting pictures, of time vanishing, and myself vanishing. And when I stepped back, I realized my work was completed. I find there is something special about work that has been completed in this way. It is like, the work was done by something which used me as the media. I think this notion is similar to Aikido’s philosophy of “Being one with the universe”. During free sessions of Aikido, we can have similar experiences when our bodies move naturally without thinking. If we have thoughts of making mistakes or try to show off, it will show in our moves. In order to experience Mu, I start off my practice with the idea that mistakes will be part of my performance and try to let myself go; a Dojo is the place to learn from mistakes. It is tricky to accomplish Mu because, if you are thinking about Mu, then you are no longer in the state of Mu. At first, I think that we must become one with the Aikido movement through plenty of Aikido practice. Then we may be able to move our body naturally, calm our mind down naturally, with Mushin (State of Nothing in Mind). I think we have no choice but to start by having consciousness of Mu. Tesshu Yamaoka, a master of Sword and Zen, was a person who dedicated his life to the quest for Mu. (HonRaiMuIchiMotsu) is a Koan (Question or statement which is used in Zen) which Tesshu pursued. My interpretation of this Koan is, “We are born from Nothing (Mu), and return to Nothing, even our existence is Nothinig. If this is our reality, then we have nothing to lose. Even we have many attachments around us when we are alive, we should remember to just appreciate being alive at this moment”. Tesshu was a person who had no attachment to money or fame. He helped poverty-stricken people even if it meant he and his family had to eat the weeds around his house. The last Shogun of the Edo era, the Admiral of the Revolution against Shogun, the Emperor of the Meiji Restoration, the Yakuza boss, and the general citizen including homeless people; people who were involved in Tesshu’s life were all fascinated by him in many ways. Even in his later years, he woke up at 5 am and continued to practice Ken and Zen until 2 am the next morning. I am impressed by the fact a Sword Master like Tesshu Yamaoka spent his whole life training 活人剣 (KatsuJinKen), a Sword that revive people, without killing a single person for his entire life. Through the training of Sword and Zen, Tesshu faced and struggled with Mu, and finally went into a state of Muto (No Sword). The philosophy of Muto is “There is no sword other than my heart, I strike opponent’s heart with my heart regardless of my sword”. He then opened a Muto-Ryu dojo called 春風館 (ShunPuKan) where he practiced and taught. It was a dojo with intense training and life-threatening examination. Tesshu was a person who lived with Mu as the vessel which directed his life. Both Tesshu and Aikido's O-Sensei devoted their lives to be one with the universe, to be Mushin, and to purify their minds. Tesshu’s thoughts and the goal he pursued seem to be similar to those of Aikido. When I think about this quote, "Busido Towa Shinukoto To Mitsuketari (The Samurai code for living can be found in the way of dying)” in Hagakure (Book of Busido). Or the story of the Samurai writing his will every morning considering that day to be the last day of his life, I can see the connection between Mu and Shi (Death). You need to face Death to the fullest, in order to Live to the fullest. Likewise, it can be said about Mu. We need to face Mu to the fullest in order to win our potential to the fullest. I think that the state of Mu is a very strong state, as there is an unlimited capacity of acceptance. I think the state of Mu is where we are ready to accept everything around us, without having prejudice or stereotypes. If we can get closer to this mental state of Mu in our daily lives, we may be able to relieve stress and live a more peaceful life. I am sensitive to things around me and this effect my feelings, so I live by constantly reminding myself of Mu. Mu has a flexible power like water and air. (Kunshi Wa Washite Dozezu Shojin Wa Dozite Wasezu). I understand this Confucius saying as; Wise people can harmonize, yet not loosing their Center (Identity). Mediocre people can compromise while loosing their Centre, yet not be able to harmonize. Likewise, water and air can be matched to anything, yet they can still maintain being water and air. I think this flexible power of Mu will make the realization of Aikido's philosophy possible. Such as being able to harmonize with the other person, yet being able to maintain your centre (Identity).

Practice to cultivate your own centre (belly). Practice to feel the partner’s centre. Without these, Aikido would be just one of many martial arts, I don't think I would have continued practice this long and wish to continue until I die. I remember one renowned Japanese painter Togyu Okumura said in his later years, “Whether the artwork has a navel or not. That is the question.” I think the same can be said in any field.

Musubi
Aikido Online STAY SAFE STAY FIT #4 -Apr 17, 2020
結び Musubi (Connection/Unification)
Musubi brings special significance to Aikido. Just beating someone up is not what Aikido is about. Just cutting someone off is not what Aikido is about. Aikido is attractive for me because its goal is to do Musubi and to Guide (Michibiku). I want to cultivate this feeling of Musubi in my daily life not just in the dojo. I see some people can do Musubi naturally. We are happy to connect with people who have great human character. For me, children are masters of Musubi. I believe that improving our character and our humanity leads to an improvement in our Musubi ability. Instead of grabbing with force to connect, harmonize and do Musubi with the movement coming from your partner’s centre, into your centre. By keeping that balance between you and your partner, you can capture your partner. Then incorporate your partner into your own movement. Since your partner’s heart (mind) is moving your partner’s body, you can move your partner’s body by working on your partner’s heart (centre). It is even better if your partner feels that she/he is moving rather than being moved. In order to do Musubi, it is important that your body and mind are as flexible as water or air. And you want to create a state of Mu (Nothingness) that is ready to accept the partner. Then sense the partner with all your senses. If you can make yourself into a state of Mu, you can perceive your partner. And if you can sense what your partner’s state is, you know when you can enter. What your partner wants. What your partner wants you to do. What your partner does not want you to do. If you can sense these, the initiative is in your hands. Rather than deny the partner; accept, connect, and guide. This is the best charm of Aikido. It can be very frustrating for many and it takes a long time for many to realize this. I was one of them. I think that the only way to get the feeling of Mu and the feeling of Musubi is to live and practice with that in mind. In order to do Musubi with people, I think we must first do Musubi with nature and with the universe. To recognize oneself in the providence of the universe and confirm the might of natural movement. This is what Aikido is about.
