Aikido is a Japanese Budo developed by Morihei Ueshiba O-Sensei (1883-1969) from the traditional Japanese martial arts.
The Aikikai Foundation (Aikido World Headquarters) was officially recognized by the Japanese government in 1940. The founder Morihei Ueshiba (O-Sensei) received the Shiju Hosho Medal from the Japanese government in 1960. Aikido is practiced in more than 130 countries around the world. The current president of the Aikikai Foundation is Moriteru Ueshiba Doshu, the grandson of the founder.

Katsumi Idogawa Sensei trained in Genseiryu Karate with Kunihiko Tosa Sensei, the president of the International Genseiryu Karatedo Federation in his early twenties in Japan. Later he started Aikido training in the Aikikai Foundation with Mosatoshi Yasuno Sensei. He also trained in Ki style Aikido at the Ki No Kenkyukai Foundation and practiced at a Special Ki Session with Koichi Tohei Sensei at the Hombu Dojo of Ki No Kenkyukai. He started teaching Aikido in his own Aikido club, Oizumi Aikido Club, in 1996 the year legendary Seigo Yamaguchi Sensei passed away. The name of the Oizumi Aikido Club comes from the name of the town in Tokyo where it was located. This club is currently being run by one of Katsumi Sensei's students Hiroyoshi Sawai Sensei. In 2004, the year he moved to Canada, he established the CMA Aikido Club. He later established the Tokyo Aikido Club in Ottawa at the Ottawa Aikido Centre and in Kemptville. In these clubs he taught Aikido to all age groups from Toddler to Adults. Oizumi Aikido Club CANADA was established in 2010.
Katsumi Sensei holds a 6th Dan (Aikikai Hombu Dojo, Tokyo, Japan).
The adviser of his club is Masatoshi Yasuno Shihan of the Aikikai Foundation (Aikido World Headquarters) 8th Dan. Katsumi Sensei’s Grand Teacher is Seigo Yamaguchi Shihan (1924~1996) 9th Dan.

Peter Carbone
Peter embarked on his martial arts journey with Shorinjiryu Karate in 1974 at the age of 18. His list of martial arts training includes Karate, Hapkido, Aikido, Taekwondo, Defendo and Modern Arnis. He holds a 4th Dan in Taekwondo and instructs this art. He trained in Aikido in the 1980’s at Carleton University with Chew Lincoln Sensei, who is a senior student of Yukio Kawahara Sensei, the first technical director of the Canadian Aikido Federation and representative of hombu dojo in Canada. All of Peter’s gradings back then were done by Kawahara Sensei. Later Peter instructed Aikido at Carleton University.

Alfredo Avila-Muñoz
Alfredo Avila joined Oizumi Aikido Club in early 2018 right after moving to Ottawa. He started in martial arts at the age of 11 practicing Karatedo for the next 9 years. He started Aikido in Queretaro, Mexico in 1999. Later, and while pursuing his graduate studies in Canada, he became a student of Stefan Barton Sensei (Kitchener, Ontario), where he was exposed to the Iwama-style Aikido curriculum. Upon returning to Mexico, he achieved Shodan and Nidan under Miguel Moreno Sensei. In 2003 he founded the Queretaro Aikikai dojo, helping several students to achieve their Shodan. He was also a student of Pat Hendricks Sensei (San Leandro, USA), who took the dojo under the California Aikido Association. He later returned to Canada in 2010 and joined the Montreal Aikikai (under Massimo di Villadorata Sensei), Mandala Aikido (under Martin Wise Sensei) and then Aikido de la Montagne (under Claude Berthiaume Sensei). For the last 18 years, Alfredo has been continuously practicing Aikido and has attended a number of major seminars in Japan, Mexico, USA and Canada with teachers such as Ueshiba Doshu, H.Tada Sensei, M. Fujita Sensei, N. Tamura Sensei, Y. Yamada Sensei, S. Endo Sensei, C. Tissier Sensei, R. Saad Sensei, V. Ha Sensei, D. Laurendeau Sensei, amongst others.

Aikido is my way of balancing all the different aspects of daily life.
Dave Sullivan
Dave was a competitive Karate practitioner for 3 years from the age of 10. He continued practicing Karate until the Dojo closed and moved far from where he lived. He obtained the rank of Green Belt in Karate. He started practicing Aikido in OACC from 2012. Dave is an instructor in the Kids Aikido Class. His sons also practice Aikido.
What is Aikido for you in one sentence?
It's very difficult for me to put what Aikido means to me, that this quote from O'Sensei helps me try to explain what Aikido means to me: "When an opponent comes forward, move in and greet him; if he wants to pull back, send him on his way"

Neb Radivojevic
Neb’s first martial art was Kickboxing when he was in High School in 1985. His first Aikido experience was with Yoshinkan Aikido when he was at the University in 1997. He had trained in the Ottawa Aikido Circle with Richard Ostrofsky Sensei from 2001 to 2006. Later he trained with Gary Roberts Sensei in Ottawa Aikido Center, Terry Lunam Sensei and Donna Winslow Sensei in Sumi Kiri Aikido. Neb started practicing Aikido with Katsumi Sensei in Tokyo Aikido Club in Ottawa in 2007. Attended Seminers and Classes; Mary Heiny Sensei (Ottawa Aikikai), Y. Yamada Sensei, H. Aikido for me, it is all about energy and harmony: Energy to feel it and be in the flow, and to be in harmony with ourselves (at the mind, spirit level) and with others.

Max’s first exposure to martial arts started when he was 10 years old and was around various wrestling disciplines such as Sambo and Classical Wrestling. He started practicing Aikido in OACC in 2011. Max is an instructor in the Kids Aikido Class. His children also practice Aikido.

For me, Aikido is a path to balance and awareness, which brings together elements of spiritual and physical energy, a key to inner peace and true potential.

Will practiced a number of martial arts growing up and obtained a brown belt in Karate. In 2012, he began to practice Aikido with the OACC where he obtained his first Dan in 2016.

Peter Marinelli
Peter was first introduced to martial arts at the age of 7 with Judo. In university, he practiced Jeet Kune Do and Kickboxing under the instruction of Sifu Michael Gregory for 7 years. His experience also includes Kendo, Iaido and Jujitsu. He returned to Japanese martial arts in 2009. He began studying Aikido with his children under Katsumi Sensei in 2011, where he has remained since.
What is Aikido for you in one sentence?
Welcoming, reading and responding to -not an adversary - but an equal partner, has made Aikido a challenging, but fulfilling, lifelong process of unlearning, relearning, and integrating my past experience with its principles rooted in humility, mutual respect and harmony.
Tieran Chan
Tieran started practicing Aikido at the After School Program with Katsumi Sensei, at the age of 7, in 2010. He obtained the First Dan Black Belt when he was 15 years old, this is the youngest age to be eligible to get a Black Belt in Aikido. He is an Aikido instructor in the After School Program.
What is Aikido for you in one sentence?
Aikido is more than a sport; it is a mindset which is both versatile on and off the mat, also it is a good doctrine to live by.
Ivo Balinov
Pursuing a lifelong dream, Ivo started Aikido in 2014 under Asim Hanif Sensei (Capital Aikikai). In 2015 he joined Oizumi Aikido and has since been practicing under the guidance of Katsumi Idogawa Sensei.

I see Aikido as a way of continuous self improvement and achieving balance in life.

Arnold Balisch
Arnold started Martial Arts in 1977 when he was 11yrs old, practicing Judo for 4 years under Dr. Michael Langford in Newfoundland. He attained the rank of Orange Belt, and was the provincial champion in his weight category. Over the intervening years, he dabbled in Aikido, KungFu, and Taekwondo (ITF Yellow Belt), until he was re-introduced to Aikido in 1994 with Lavigne Sensei in Fredericton, New Brunswick while attending university at UNB. After moving to Ottawa, he practiced with David Yates Sensei at Kanata Aikikai. He started practicing Aikido with Katsumi Sensei from 2004 at the CMA Aikido Club. Arnold obtained his First Dan in 2012.
What is Aikido for you in one sentence?
For me, the Aikido style, which deals with outside events impinging on us by smoothly blending with them (without aggression) rather than opposing them, teaches not just physical movement, but a state of mind which is applicable to how we think and react to all situations encountered in life.

Raya moved to Canada from Japan in 2004. In the same year, she started practicing Aikido at the age of 4 in CMA Aikido Club. She has been continuously on the mat ever since. She has been an assistant of Katsumi Sensei and assisted in the establishment of OACC from 2009. Raya is an Aikido instructor in the After School Programs.

For me Aikido is a spiritual grounding which helps you embrace challenges by allowing you to step back and evaluate the situation, as such Aikido taught me that I am in complete control of my life.
